FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“Southern Brothers Release Real Life With Concert In Missouri”

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (2-23-10)  Newly formed Willow Creek Records is pleased to announce the release of the brand new Southern Brothers project, Real Life.  Scott, Todd and Tim celebrated the release with a concert held in their home state of Missouri at the Cape County Cowboy Church.  The popular brothers performed with a live band to a room full of fans, friends and media that totaled over 1,300.  Real Life was produced by Terry Thompson and features the trio’s well-known country vocals combined with Gospel lyrics on selections written by writers such as Dallas Davidson, Randy Hauser, Stephen Curtis Chapman, Tony Wood, Sue C. Smith, John Meyer, Jay Demarcus, Hillary Lindsey, James Slater, Bart Millard, and two selections written by group member, Scott Mills. Their current single, “Back  To God,”  is playing on radio stations nationwide.  Real Life released in early February and can be purchased on iTunes and www.willowcreekrecordsnashville.com.

“The Southern Brothers couldn’t be more excited about the new album.  We were so amazed by the folks that came out to hear us country boys on a very, snowy day a few weeks ago. Interestingly enough, it seemed as though the audience set through the first couple of songs in awe of what they were hearing and seeing. Quickly after that, everyone joined in and had a great time. We had several folks say that the concert was breathtaking, and they were thoroughly impressed to the point that we got to go home with most everyone there in the form of our brand new cd. We thank the Cape County Cowboy Church for their support and generosity,"  commented member, Tim Mills.

With over 20 years in music, the Southern Brothers are no stranger to gospel music.  They were the host group at Branson’s own Silver Dollar City, where they performed five days a week to thousands of park visitors.  They later took their ministry on the road and continue to travel thousands of miles spreading the Gospel in music.  During their career, the brothers have claimed numerous top 40 and top 10 hit songs. They have been featured on the Gaither Homecoming Video Series, TBN, Swan's Place and various concerts with many of today’s top artists.  They are currently scheduled to embark on their Real Life 2010 multi-city tour with special guest, Crawford Crossing, on May 22, 2010 at the Southeast River Campus in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

WCR Nashville signs Southern Brothers to exclusive recording contract.

“We are so excited to have these great guys as part of our WCRnashville family. I have worked with these guys for several years now, and we are so excited to be working on this brand new debut release on WCRnashville which is slated for a FEB 2010 release states Terry Thompson.”
Stay tuned for exciting news reagarding the release of “Real Life” from the Southern Brothers!

When asked to reflect about the over twenty years of music that the Southern Brothers have sung, recorded, and performed, a great range of emotions well up.  The Southern Brothers ministry and career have the makings of a great novel or movie.  A great story contains drama, laughter, successes and failures and the story of the Scott, Tim and Todd Mills (corporately known as the Southern Brothers) can fill all of the above.  This journey is one of redemption, success, and a testament to the unwavering music and message of three brothers wanting only to present the Gospel in a style that is unique and worthy of the Creator in whom they sing.
When asked about the group's motivation in doing what they do - the guys say it can be a somewhat complicated answer. "I believe our motivation is at the very least 2-fold," mentioned Tim. "We sing Gospel music, so our motivation is to uplift God and be a ray of light to people that do not know Jesus and present the Gospel in a fresh and entertaining way.  Also, we strongly believe that our job is to uplift the saints." Scott Mills continued, "When you sing Gospel music, the majority of your audience tends to be Christians.  Christian should be the happiest people on earth.  Having said that, Christians still have faults, failures and daily challenges.  We believe that our job is to uplift the fellow Christian and remind them of the love that Jesus has for them and to encourage them through difficult times in their lives."
“On a non-spiritual note, we are passionate about creating what we feel is great music.  All three of us believe that the Christian community and local church should not have to take a back seat when it comes to musical quality," mentioned Todd. "Some of our greatest compliments received were from people that did not listen to Gospel music, never attended church but wanted to buy a CD because they simply enjoyed our music.  The Gospel is delivered to someone that has never been open, and it is an affirmation that our music is being received to not only the church, but the world as well."
When asked to describe the style of the Southern Brothers, the typical response is one of a wry smile and slight chuckle.  “I can’t explain their style but its good!” or a similar variation usually is spoken.  The Southern Brothers style is a melting pot of many influences ranging from classic Southern Gospel, Country, Bluegrass and other styles of music.
Yes, it is difficult to “pigeon-hole” the style and brand of music that the Southern Brothers produce.  Are they classic Gospel? Yes.  Are they a little country/bluegrass mixed with tight harmonies?  Of course.  Rather than describe the Southern Brothers, experience their music and put your own label on.  Experience the sound that is distinctive, inspired and unapologetic.  Come and be part of a 20 year journey that is only beginning and where the best is yet to come.

(5) Tips On How To Make A Successful Independent Record!

Advice and Tips from Award Winning Producer/Engineer
Terry Thompson

(1) You need a Producer!

So what is a producer?  In essence, the role of the producer is to do whatever he or she needs to do to make a great record that sells.  Some producers handle everything including finances, supervise the recording process, while others work directly on the music themselves. You want a Producer that oversees all aspects of the recording.  From helping with song selection, pre-production with you the artist, arranging of the songs, musicians, engineer and studio selection, producing the tracking sessions, overdub sessions, vocal sessions, editing and mixing sessions, and selecting a mastering studio and engineer.  The person that you want producing your record is one that is very involved with the entire process because after all, it’s not only your record, but it’s their name and reputation that goes on it as Producer.

(2) Remember it all starts with a song.

Make sure you research and find the best possible song(s) available to put on your record. Great tracks with bad songs adds up to just that... Great tracks with bad songs.  Also, just because you write a song or songs and your momma says they are great, doesn’t mean that they need to go on your record!  You cannot make a great record that appeals to the listener and potential buyer with a CD full of BAD songs.  Finding the right songs is an art form all in itself.  There are tons of great writers and songs out there that may be available to you.  This is another reason to have a great producer.  They are in touch with what’s going on in the music world, and can assist you in choosing songs that best fits you vocally, stylistically, commercially,  that best portrays you as an artist.

(3) We Have The Songs, and Producer, Now What?

You need to meet with your producer and talk through each song and get the musical direction for each song, as well as the entire record. This should take place in a pre-production meeting before you ever step into the studio.  Make sure you pick correct keys for your vocal range and abilities.

Tracking Sessions
It is usually overwhelming on track day, so it’s best to track with a good solid rhythm section and only the basic lead instruments.
Be prepared to record a “scratch” vocal with the basic tracks.  This is a vocal that you will not keep, but gives the musicians a great understanding of what is going on with the song.
Be involved and in tune with what’s happening.  Make sure it feels good to you.  Sometimes you don’t see the full picture, and again this is where your producer comes in.
Make sure you have fun with it and keep everything light hearted.  Tracking sessions are as much about creating the right mood than anything else.
At the end of the day, leave the studio with a rough copy of what you recorded.  This gives you something to listen to over the next several days to get more comfortable with and feel good about, before coming back for your final vocal sessions.

Vocal Sessions
It is usually best not to allow too much time to lapse between tracking session and final vocals.  Sometimes if you work to hard and get something stuck in your head, it is hard to change and critique once in the studio. Just make sure you have enough time to be comfortable with the overall feel and structure of the track.
When working on a song, be prepared to record a line, phrase, word, etc., over and over.   Don’t be discouraged you’re not alone. “This is the way everyone does it”.
If you are a group/band it usually works better to record one vocal part at a time.  This allows your producer to focus in on only that part and singer and get the most out of them.
Allow plenty of vocal time in your budget.  This is one of, if not the most important part of the entire recording process.  You want this to be the best representation of you possible.  You don’t want to feel rushed because it will show in the final product.
Get plenty of rest and make sure you are in good vocal shape before you go in to record vocals.  This can be a stressful time, so be prepared.  Remember, have fun!

Overdub Sessions

These are sessions that you may or may not be involved with due to scheduling and time constraints.  These may include but not be limited to, Instrument Overdubs, Background Vocals, Orchestrations, etc.  These are the things that make your tracks sparkle and give them that completed commercial sound.

Editing and Mixing

This is where we put all of the pieces of the puzzle together.

Editing consists of cleaning up all tracks, digital vocal tuning and alignment, and any track tweaking necessary.
Final Mix is processing all of the individual tracks with the appropriate EQ’s, Compression, Effects, etc.  and then leveling and mixing all together to make the completed sound.
Stage/TV Tracks- you will want to make sure you receive a copy of “tracks only” which will include everything, minus the artists vocals for performance use on stage, tv etc.
** You need to plan to be in on the final mix tweak session. This is where you and your producer   listen   to each song and make any final mix tweaks before going to final mastering.

Final Mastering

After you have your final mix completed you will want to send your mix master to final mastering.  Mastering your project makes a huge difference. By adjusting song levels and tweaking the EQ, mastering will improve your project and it gives it that “commercial/polished” sound you are use to hearing on all the big records, and needs to be done in order to play on radio, etc.  Usually your producer takes care of selecting the mastering studio and gets you a listening ref from the mastering studio to approve before going on to CD manufacturing. It’s a good idea to find outside people who specialize in mastering, as they will have fresh ears and are used to thinking about a CD as a whole. Make sure and use a facility that specializes in mastering.

(4) Photo Session, Graphics, and Packaging

So my cousin is a photographer, should I use them?  Sure you can!  But remember this is a representation of you.  You want to look the very best you can.  Your cousin may take great wedding pictures, but did He take the cover shot of the latest cd you just bought at the store?  I’m saying all of that to say, you should hire a professional photography that specializes in taking pictures of artists for cd covers.  It will make a difference and make your cd cover look professional.

The artwork and graphics are the first impression of you as an Artist.  Before the listener ever hears what’s on the cd, they get an impression of what and who you are by looking at the cd packaging.  Make it look top-notch!

(5) Marketing and Promotion

Promotion
If you want to promote yourself and the music you recorded, you have to have promotion.  There are people that specialize in just this and they work for you the artist to promote your new music for radio and video airplay.  Here again it is important that you do some research on this and the companies that do this.  What is their track record?  Ask others about them.  Remember they are representing you and you want the best possible.
Marketing
Social media is one of the most effective ways you can promote yourself as an artist right now.  This is something you can do yourself, but it takes due diligence to keep on top of and to make sure you stay current and relevant!  Also you will want to get yourself and your new cd into trade publications and magazines that promote your style of music.  Again, there are companies that specialize in marketing and have all the contacts that are necessary to help you with this process.  It is important to get your face and information in front of as many people as possible.

I hope these ideas, suggestions, and opinions help you when thinking about your next recording project.  I would love to assist you with your next recording project!

Thanks for reading,
